The house

42 is a small ready-to-wear house built on one hunch: a wardrobe fits in a bag.

01

The name

Four. Two. Say the two English digits out loud and let a French accent do the rest: fourre-tout, a catch-all.

A catch-all does not sort. It takes the wool coat and the child’s stained sweatshirt, the office shirt and the Sunday tee. We wanted a label that works like that bag: few pieces, many uses, nothing assigned.

02

Semi-luxury, as we mean it

The materials and workshops of luxury, without the margin of luxury. We work directly with three European workshops, and we print the country of make on every product page.

In exchange we give up runway collections, seasonal campaigns and our own stores. What you pay covers the cloth, the hands and the repairs — not the shop window.

03

Genderless by construction

The kids line is entirely unisex. On the adult collection, women’s and men’s refer only to a pattern — the way a piece is cut — never to the person wearing it.

Most of our pieces are cut on a unisex pattern anyway. It is simpler to produce, and more honest.

04

Mend rather than replace

Any 42 piece comes back to the workshop, for life, for a patch, a hem or a new lining. The round trip is on us.

We do not see this as after-sales service but as the only serious measure of a garment’s quality: the number of years it spends on someone’s shoulders.
